Joseph Antonio Cartagena, better known by his stage name Fat Joey, was born on August 19, 1970 in New York City, U.S. He is not only a very popular face in the rapping world but also a popular actor and an entrepreneur. He is the CEO of the Terror Squad Entertainment. Though mostly people know him as a solo artist, he also works with D.I.T.C. and Terror Squad. He has released ten studio albums and his duet song with Remy Ma, ‘Lean Back’, scored a #1 hit in 2004. He is currently living in Miami and is married with three children.


Fat Joey is one of the most favorite and influential people in the rapping world.  He is the highest paid rapper in the world. He is not only a rapper but also a successful actor which brings in huge sums of money for Joey. Joey is also into business and is quite successful. He is a CEO of the Terror Squad Entertainment. Besides, he owns several restaurants (‘Fat Fat Joey Burger’) in Washington, a Football Team (the ‘New York Angels’), has launched his own brand of Vodka (Pure Wonderfat Joe-US), a top-selling perfume (With Love from Joe) as well as a fashion line by the name ‘Fat Joe Seduction’. He also makes a good fortune from smart stock investments, substantial property holdings and endorsement deals with CoverGirl cosmetics. The Musical Journey:

Fat Joey has released 10 music albums in all. His first album was entitled ‘Represent’ which was released in the year 1993. After two years, his second album reached the public. It was called ‘Jealous One’s Envy’. In the year 2004, one of Joey’s hits called ‘Lean Back’ was released. Between the years 1998 and 2006, he released four albums in all with the Atlantic Records music label company. All the four albums were financially successful and Joey earned a good sum of money. These albums were ‘Jealous Ones Still Envy’, ‘Don Cartagena’, ‘Loyalty’ and ‘All or Nothing’. The release of the album ‘All or Nothing’ was the time when Joey got into an argument with another rapper from New York, 50 Cent. 50 Cent had earlier said some attacking remarks about Joey in his song called ‘Piggy Bank’.

In 2006, Fat signed with the record label company, Imperial Records, which was a branch of his own company Terror Squad. He released his album ‘Me, Myself and I’ under this label, his seventh album. Other successful albums of the rapper are ‘The Elephant in the Room’, ‘Jealous Ones Still Envy 2’ and ‘The Darkside Volume 1’. These albums witnessed amazing sales with some of them being placed in the Top 20 Billboard charts. In 2010, he signed a record deal with E1 Music and released his album The Darkside Volume 1.

Awards and Achievements:

Fat Joey won the Billboard Lain Music Award for ‘I Don’t Care’ in the year 2006. In 2003, he was nominated for the Grammy Award in the category of ‘Best Rap/Sung Collaboration’ for ‘What’s Luv?’ and again in 2008, in the category of ‘Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group’ for ‘Make It Rain’. He was also nominated for BET Awards in 2005 and MTV Video Music Awards in 2002. 


Community Work:

Fat Joey is a socially responsible personality. He went back to his old school in the Bronx, New York to donate computers to the kids there. Joey is also a good speaker and was invited to ‘School is Cool’ assembly in Public School 5, New Jersey. On January 23, 2011, he along with Newark mayor Cory Booker and fitness expert Jeff Halevy was present at the Newark branch of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative. It is an initiative started by Michelle Obama to fight against childhood obesity. Joey himself faces the problem of obesity and has worked hard to bring down his weight. In 2011, he shredded 88 pounds from his previous 350 pounds. He did so without using any external supplements but by simply combining two hour cardio with weight lifting exercises and proper eating habits.


Joey Fat has been quite surrounded by controversies over the years. On September 8, 1998, Fat Joey and Big Pun were arrested on charges of assault for hitting a man with baseball bat and stealing his gold chain. Joey was arrested again in May 2012, for allegedly fighting with another man in Times Square. However, the charges were later dropped. Joey has also been named as a witness in two murder cases. According to Miami Beach Police, Fat Joey was a witness in a Memorial Day double homicide outside David’s Café II in South Beach. Joe’s former bodyguard, Jose Mulero (also known as Sing Song), was arrested on September 17, 200 4for shooting a 16-year-old at a Bronx nightclub.

In December 2012, Fat Joey was found guilty of tax evasion on over 3 million dollars from 2007-2010. It was said that he could face up to two years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $200,000. On June 24, 2013, he was sentenced to four months in prison regarding the same. His sentence began on August 26, 2013 and lasted up to November 28, 2013.
