Head Start

Born on February 8th, 1974, Seth has worked non-stop as an actor since he was seven years old. His uncle, a casting director, helped Green to get early commercial work. Soon, Green was appearing on behalf of Kodak, Burger King, RCA and others. He caught the acting bug after appearing in “The Sound of Music” on a cruise ship. His first movie roles were in the 1984 films Billions for Boris and The Hotel New Hampshire. The latter cast him alongside Jodie Foster and Robe Lowe.  Walk-on parts in several major television shows followed. He appeared in the 1987 film Can’t Buy Me Love, playing the part of Patrick Dempsey’s character’s younger brother. He also starred in Woody Allen’s Radio Days (1987) as Joe. Aside from the occasional television appearance, the mid-teens were slow years for Green.

Big Break

In 1997, Seth Green caught public’s eye as Scott Evil in Mike Myers’ Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Interactions between the bumbling Dr. Evil (Myers) and his crabby, rebellious son were so popular. Myers expanded the role in 1999 sequel, The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Meanwhile, Green managed to parley several guest appearances on the hit television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer  into a regular role on the show. From 1997 to 1999, Green played an aspiring musician and a werewolf.

More on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

He had filmed a part for Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992); the part was left on the cutting room floor, but a still from the scene appeared on the rear of the commercial release videocassette box. Seth eventually got to be on the show, though. At 13 year’s old he played Alyson Hannigan’s boyfriend ‘Fred’ in My Stepmother is an Alien (1988).  Ten years later, at the age of 23, he played her boyfriend yet again when he landed the role of ‘Oz’ on the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Along with Chi Muoi Lo, he is one of only two actors to appear in both Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) and the subsequent television adaptation Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997). However, his scenes in the former were cut from the final version of the film.

Other work

Green followed with a steady stream of bit and ensemble roles in films like Enemy of the State (1998), Idle Hands (1999), America’s Sweethearts (2001) and the screwball comedy Rat Race (2001).

In 1999, he joind the cast of the series Family Guy as the oldest son Chris Griffin. Althought the show got cancelled after 3 seasons, it returned to the air thanks to fans of the series. After returning to the air, the show has gone on to become a hit series.

In 2002, Green earned a starring role in the FOX sitcom Greg the Bunny, in which he plays Jimmy Bender, best friend of the temperamental puppet-star of the fictional children’s show Sweetknuckle Junction.

Seth voiced the character Jeff (Joker) Moreau in the popular third person cover based RPG games Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3.

Seth revealed in a 2005 “Fresh Air with Terry Gross” interview that he had auditioned for the American Beauty (1999) role that eventually went to Wes Bentley, and he was the runner-up for the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) role that went to Elijah Wood.

Not many people know that he was responsible for one of the most overused catchphrases of the 1990s. In 1992 he appeared in a commercial for Rally’s Burgers as an obnoxious drive-thru cashier who kept repeating the line “Cha-CHING!!” over and over again and the line entered the popular culture.

Seth based the gravelly voice of Chris Griffin in Family Guy (1999) on the Buffalo Bill character from The Silence of the Lambs (1991).
