“I get paid for what most kids get punished for.”

– Jerry Lewis

Profession – Actor, Singer, Film Producer, Comedian, Screenwriter, Film Director and Philanthropist

Jerry Lewis is famously known as “The King of Comedy”. Besides this, he has also known by two more names viz. Le Roi du Crazy and Picchiatello. He is popularly known for his farce in film, television, stage and radio.

Medium – Stage, film, television, radio

Early Life and Career

Jerry Lewis was born as Jerome Levitch in Newark, New Jersey, USA on March 16, 1926 to the proud parents Daniel Levitch and Rae Lewis. His parents are Russian-Jewish. Lewis father was a master of ceremonies and vaudeville entertainer. Danny Lewis, a professional name, was used by Daniel Levitch (his father). His mother Rachel Levitch aka Rae Lewis worked in a radio station (New York City, WOR) as a piano player and also as Danny’s musical director. Starting from his early age he often used to work with his parents in the Catskill Mountains in New York State. At age 5 he made his debut from the song “Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?” Before he became famous as Jerry Lewis he used his professional name as Joey Lewis. He made this change to avoid confusion with comedian Joe E.Lewis and heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis. Irvington High School dropped Lewis out of the school when he was in tenth grade.

Lewis also applied for military services during World War II but was rejected because of the heart murmur.

Genres –character comedy, physical Comedy

Career

Lewis and Martin

Till the year 1946 he worked alone or with his parents but in the 1946 he paired with the Dean Martin and became popular by working with him. Dean Martin is a popular singer. Soon they formed a comedy team Martin and Lewis which became very popular. Not only this, the duo also starred in a comic series for Paramount Pictures. The king of Comedy is also a well known host for about more than 40 years. Unlike other comedy acts, their acts are not scripted but are based on the interaction together. They both appeared in many films such as in My Friend Irma and its sequel My Friend Irma Goes West (1950). They ended their career with paramount films with the movie Hollywood or Bust. Consequently the role of martin became less important and this lead to the fading away of the team Martin and Lewis. In addition the look magazine in 1954 added its cover photo of Lewis without Martin (cropped the photo) that made their relations strained. Finally the duo ended as team in July 1956.

This became a great story for the DC comics as they released the best selling comic named “The Adventures of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis ”.

After splitting with Martin, Lewis again started working with Paramount films and became a major comedy star with The Delicate Delinquent (1957). Lewis also released solo music in 1950, “Rock-a-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody” and the song, “It All Depends on You” in 1958. Eventually he released his own album “Jerry Lewis Just Sings”.

After working in The Delicate Delinquent he also appeared in Rock-A-Bye Baby (1958) and The Geisha Boy (1958). In 1959, Lewis signed a contract with Paramount. Besides these, Jerry also directed several films (followed The Bellboy) such as The Ladies Man (1961), The Errand Boy (1961), The Patsy (1964) and the well-known comedy, The Nutty Professor (1963).

He packed up with Paramount and moved to Columbia Pictures as Paramount didn’t renew his profit sharing contract. Lewis also took film directing class at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Both of them were again paired when Martin’s son Dean Paul Martin passed away in 1987. Also, after that Lewis bought a cake for Martin on his 72 birthday and sang birthday song for him.

Sheldon Gary Adelson is better known as Sheldon Adelson. He was born on August 4, 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Sheldon belongs to a Ukrainian Jewish background. Sheldon grew up in the neighborhood of Boston, Dorchester.

Adelson started his business career by selling the newspaper at the age of 12. He was able to start this business by borrowing the amount of two hundred dollars from his uncle and with that money he purchased the license for the same. He continued with the newspaper selling business for 4 years. Then at the age of 16, Sheldon set up a business of candy vending machine. Sheldon wished to become a court reporter, so he attended the trade school for that. Moreover, he also joined the army after that. But soon he was discharged from army. After that he again started a new business of toiletry kits. Soon he changed his business, named De-Ice-It. This company sold the chemical spray helpful in clearing frozen windshields.

“Entrepreneurship is essentially identifying the path that everyone takes; and choosing a different, better way”

Then Adelson in 1998 purchased a casino in Las Vegas, Sands Hotel and Casino, again with his partners. He then constructed Sands Expo and Convention Center, the only privately owned and operated convention center in the US. Adelson then got inspiration for a mega-resort hotel in Vennice during his second honeymoon in 1991. To accomplish this he spent $1.5 billion to construct The Venetian, Venice-themed resort hotel and casino and knocked his Sands to pieces. In the year 2000, Adelson decided to build a casino resort, one of five stand-alone casinos in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The casino was opened in 2009. In 2003, The Venetian was upgraded by adding 1,013-suite Venezia tower – giving the hotel 4,049 suites; 18 restaurants and a shopping mall with canals, gondolas and singing gondoliers. In 2007, he opened the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel on Cotai worth $2.4 billion. Sheldon also planned to open various hotels such as Four Seasons, Sheraton and St. Regis. Now Adelson wanted to expand his Sands in other countries. He started it with Macau, the Chinese gambling city. Then he decided to compete with Israeli by publishing free daily newspaper. In 2007, the first edition of Israel HaYom (new newspaper) was published. Also, initially this newspaper was distributed for free. Recently in March 2014, Sheldon was officially permitted to purchase the Maariv and the conservative religious Zionist newspaper Makor Rishon from a Jerusalem court.

Born as Donald Hugh Henley, is best known as a founding member of the Eagles. He is better known as Don Henley. Don is an American Singer, songwriter and a drummer.

Early life and career

Henley, the son of Hughlene (McWhorter) and C. J. Henley, was born on July 22, 1947 in Gilmer, Texas, United States. He grew up in Linden (small Texas town in northeast). His father was the owner of an auto parts store and his mother was a teacher. Henley’s father was dying from heart and arterial disease so he left his school to spend time with him. Henley graduated from high school in 1965. In his high school he formed a band called The Four Speeds with his childhood friends Richard Bowden and Jerry Surratt. Then he attended the Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. After that Henley enrolled himself in North Texas State University in Denton, Texas, from 1967 to 1969. After completing his education in North Texas State University he transferred to Los Angeles in 1970. Don in Los Angeles recorded an album with Shiloh, his early band. Soon after that Don Henley met Glenn Frey. Meeting her proved to be the turning point in his life. Initially, Don and Glen became the member of the Linda Ronstadt’s backup band. After two months of joining Linda Ronstadt’s backup band they formed Eagles along with Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner.

Eagle’s released their first album including “Take it easy” in 1972, which was formed in September 1971. As Henley is a singer, so he also performed as a lead vocalist in many Eagles popular songs. The list includes “Desperado”, “Witchy Woman”, “Best of My Love”, “One of These Nights”, “Hotel California”, “The Long Run”, “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Wasted Time”. With this, the band became so popular and became the history as they were the highest selling American band in U.S. history. They also made their home among the top 5 overall best-selling bands of all time in America.

Unfortunately in 1980 during the recording of The Long Run, the band Eagles was knocked to pieces because of the personal tensions among them. But consequently in the year 1994, the band Eagles again reunited and again started releasing albums. Their latest album released was Long Road Out of Eden in 2007.

Instruments- Vocals, Drums, Keyboard, Guitar, synthesizers and percussions.

After splitting up with Eagles, Henley alone started his career as a solo artist. He with his then girlfriend Stevie Nicks in 1981 had duetted on “Leather and Lace” (her Adult Contemporary hit). Henley’s first solo album I Can’t Stand Still was released in 1982. His first album didn’t become so popular and was a moderate seller. Don’s single Dirty Laundry” became so popular that it earned a Gold-certified single in 1983 by selling over a million copies in the US. It also reached #3 on Billboard Hot 100. Henley also sang a song for the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) titled “Love Rules”. His next single release was “The Boys of Summer”, which was again a hit reaching the number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The soundtrack of movie The Color of Money became so popular and was positioned #3.

After three years in 1989, Don released his next album named The End of the Innocence. After that he released “The Heart of the Matter”, “The Last Worthless Evening” and “New York Minute” which again gained a lot of popularity. In addition with his singing Don Henley also appeared on on MTV’s Unplugged series. In 1995, to promote his album Actual Miles: Henley’s Greatest Hits, he released a next single titled “The Garden of Allah”.

Henley’s singing career got a pause when Geffen Records company filed a case against him. During that hiatus Don didn’t stop singing and recorded a few songs such as “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” for the film Leap of Faith, provided background vocals for country star Trisha Yearwood’s hit single “Walkaway Joe”, and duetted with Patty Smyth on “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough” and Roger Waters on “Watching TV” on Waters’ Amused to Death album, in 1992.

Rich quotes

“I could stand out front and sing Eagles songs that I sing in my set, but I think people enjoy watching me sing and play the drums. It seems to fascinate people. I don’t know why.”

“I have things that I am interested in, and that’s usually what comes out on the album.”

“I would rather take a long time and make a record with eight or ten good songs on it than to rush one out with only one or two good songs on it, which is what I find to be the case most of the time.”

“I’m always jotting things down on pieces of paper. I’ve got pieces of paper all over my house.”

“I’m not scary; I’m just opinionated.”

“Growing up is not being so dead-set on making everybody happy.”

“I use all my skills that I can muster up, but the fun thing is that I find some untapped skills every once in a while. I get that from my daddy.”

Personal Quotes
It’s very difficult for me to say ‘I love you’ but to sing ‘I love you’ for me is easier.

My voice is unadorned. I don’t try for perfection. I try to be honest and truthful and soulful with the voice I have. If I make mistakes in notes, or there are cracks in notes, I don’t fix them. That’s the way it is.

I’m not there to entertain people. We’re there to do something together.

I never expected that I would be doing this for as long as I’ve been doing it. So looking back and seeing that it’s been over 40 years since the first hits makes you think, ‘Is there a time that you stop?’ But I don’t think I’m ever going to stop. It’s the only challenge I have left in my life.

I want to know what marathon runners do. Because I do the same thing. I run a two-hour marathon every time onstage. So I have my electrolytes kept at a certain level, and I do my carb-loading after the shows for the next night.

Somehow it’s dawning on me that I’m a more mature individual and I’m not a kid writing ‘Cherry, Cherry’ anymore.

I already have “Sweet Caroline”. Most of these people haven’t heard “Hell Yeah” or “Man of God”, but I see them and they’re listening, and that’s really all I want.
This is my job. Someone much greater than me gave me that job. He said, “You, you with that stupid look on your face – go out and sing until I tell you to stop”. I haven’t heard the word yet so I’m just going to keep doing it.

Love is the elixir of eternal youth.
