Butler was born in Scotland, in 1969, to the proud parents Margaret and Edward Butler. He completed his law degree at the University of Glasgow.

Gerard was basically trained for being a lawyer and he was successful enough in law school to be able to get a job as a trainee lawyer at a law firm in Edinburgh. This was mainly because of his high absence from the office.

Butler always had the dream of being famous and so, to fulfill his dream, he went to London. He worked hard but got no success for quite some time. He worked as a waiter too! Butler got his first acting job at the age of 27.

Butler’s two major roles in the beginning of his career were in the movies Attila and Dracula 2000.
