He released his first album, Lifestyles of the poor and the dangerous, in 1995. It peaked at number 149 on the billboard charts. It was the #22 album on Hip Hop RnB charts. The album sold more than 2,00,000 copies. The album gave Big L some mainstream attention as well. He performed at the birthday bash of Lord Finesse along with Nas. He was later dropped out of Columbia because of a dispute. His album received an acclaim from the critics. In 1997, he started his own recording label, Flamboyant recordings. He released a single named ‘Ebonics’. Source named it as one of the best independent singles of the year. He grabbed the attention of Roc-a-fella records and was in talks to sign a deal.

However, in 1999 Big L was killed in a drive-by shooting, similar to Biggie and Tupac. He was allegedly killed because of a rift his brother had with one of the gangster groups of New York. After his death, an album ‘The Big Picture’ was released. It featured many famous people such as Fat Joe, Guru, Kool G rap and Big Daddy Kane.
