EARLY LIFE AND CAREER

It all began when Simmons met McDaniels. They were both aspiring DJs but soon developed an interest in Rapping. They used to Rap at local events. Soon, they met a famous DJ named Mizell. The 3 became close friends and began making music. They soon became locally famous. They started recording songs and were eventually signed by Profile Records. They released their first single ‘It’s like that’ in 1983. It was a huge hit and peaked at #15 on R&B charts. They released their debut album Run-DMC in 1984. The album was a huge hit. Their sound was a mixture of Rock and Rap. Rap was evolving to new sounds and they pioneered the new-school Hip Hop movement. They set a trend in Hip Hop with their attires. After Run-DMC’s success, the next album was named ‘King of Rock’. It was extremely successful and achieved the platinum status. In 1986, Run-DMC collaborated with Rick Rubin and released an album named Raising Hell. the album was the most successful album by the group and achieved a multi-platinum status. Raising hell was cited as the beginning of Golden age of Hip Hop. They paved the way for many successful artists such as Beastie Boys and LL Cool J. They went on a tour with Beastie Boys as well during that period. In 1988, they released an album named ‘Tougher than Leather’. The albu didn’t do as well as its predecessor but was a hit. It boasted many strong singles in it. They also starred in a movie of the same name. The movie was directed by Rick Rubin. In 1990, Run-DMC released ‘Back from Hell’. It received poor reviews although a few singles became very successful. After the failure of their album, they became a bit stressed. Run and DMC joined a church. They started everything from the start. They returned in 1993 with the album ‘Down with the King’. It became extremely successful and peaked at number 1 position. This marked the return of Run-DMC. The album was declared Platinum. The Group went on tours for 10 years but eventually disbanded due to many creative difference. Jam Master Jay was murdered in 2002. After his death, the group officially retired.

FAMOUS QUOTES

‘It seems like stupid America celebrates a person that says “yeah I’m a drug dealer, I’m bringing the drugs into the hood”. The reason why hip hop exists is because it started out with good intentions, once all the good intentions left the music became polluted, it became disrespectful it became immature.’

“I need a little help Jay, I got a little problem. A guy like yourself, maybe you can help me solve em . I only want to know why this happens all the time
(What?) Everywhere I go, I start to rap and rhyme . I rock them in the day (yeah you rock em every night) . I rock em when I left so def I knew something was wrong (alright). I rhyme when I am sleeping, I rhyme when I’m awake.”

“When I was nine I said a rhyme by putting candles on my cake. I just came from the bank (you said a rhyme?) A rhyme so funny. A song about the line so long they all gave me their money. That’s why I came to you, you’re my friend (yes that is true). Said maybe Jay knows what to say, he’ll tell me what to do.. ”

‘If you make a record about a gun, on that very same record or album there’s gotta be a record about not using a gun. If you’re making a record on the b**** or the h*es, there’s got to be a record about your aunt who worked all of the days of her life to send all her children to college,’

‘When we made the record for adidas we didn’t make it to get an endorsement, it wasn’t about business. We took positivity and made it gangsta, we never knew we would do something historic.’

FAMOUS QUOTES BY COMMON

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

“Beauty is only skin deep. If you go after someone just because she’s beautiful but don’t have anything to talk about, it’s going to get boring fast. You want to look beyond the surface and see if you can have fun or if you have anything in common with this person.”

“In 2003, my girlfriend and I broke up. We’d been together for two years—we were practically engaged—and had been friends for years before that. After we parted ways, I entered a long period of heartbreak. Like any person who’s been rejected, I thought, Man, what’s wrong with me? I tried to figure out which of my own flaws had kept us from having a successful relationship. But in my gut, I knew my mistakes. My ex had a lot of power and presence, and that had made me less assertive about my own needs. I had sacrificed parts of who I am to avoid conflict. When you’re not sticking up for yourself, things start building up.”

“Now, in an intimidating situation—say, in conversation with a movie director—I’m not thinking, I’ll come off as a jerk if I give my opinion on this scene. I’ll just come out and say it. “

“I realized I’d been consistently reining myself in—in relationships, friendships and work—to avoid disappointing anyone or making people uncomfortable. I knew I had to embrace the gifts God gave me—I had to let my light shine. When I started doing that, I immediately felt stronger. “
