She grew up near Johannesburg. Theron suffered in her childhood. Her father was an alcoholic who attacked her mother and used to threaten both her mother and herself. Theron’s mother killed Charles Theron and the act was judged as self defense. The mother faced no charges. Theron went to Putfontein Primary School. Charlize Theron always saw herself as a dancer. When she was 16 years of age, she won a modeling contract in Salerno, in a local competition. After this, she moved to Milan with her mother. In Milan, she spent the year modeling all over Europe. When the contract finished, Theron and her mother moved to New York City and Miami. After moving to the Big Apple, Theron started going to Joffrey Ballet School but, she got really badly injured and the doors of the ballet world got closed forever.
