Butler was born in Scotland, in 1969, to the proud parents Margaret and Edward Butler. He completed his law degree at the University of Glasgow.
Butler’s parents went through a bitter divorce when Butler was merely 18 months old. He always held positions of responsibility in school, being a prefect and later, a head boy.
When Butler was 22, his father was found to be suffering from the deadly disease that is cancer, and he died. His father’s death greatly changed Butler’s outlook on life. He went from caring about every little thing to not caring even if he dies in his sleep.
CAREER
Gerard was basically trained for being a lawyer and he was successful enough in law school to be able to get a job as a trainee lawyer at a law firm in Edinburgh. Butler had a very wild attitude back then, which got him into a lot of trouble. Just one week before the official declaration of him being a lawyer, he was fired from his job. This was mainly because of his high absence from the office.
Butler always had the dream of being famous and so, to fulfill his dream, he went to London. He worked hard but got no success for quite some time. He worked as a waiter too! Butler got his first acting job at the age of 27.
Butler’s two major roles in the beginning of his career were in the movies Attila and Dracula 2000. Following these two movies, he appeared in movies like Reign of Fire, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, Timelines, The Phantom of the Opera, Dear Frankie, Beowulf & Grendel and the list goes on.
In 2007, the movie 300 brought him a lot of fame and critical acclaim. His acting was well appreciated. This roles is often called his breakthrough into the acting industry.
