Profession: Singer, Record producer and dancer
The net worth of American R&B singer, dancer and record producer is $16 million, according to many sources; given the way he has been climbing the success ladder it doesn’t seem hard to believe. His real name is Shaffer Chimere Smith but later changed to Ne-Yo. His career took off as a songwriter but he gained prominence after his hit ‘Let me love you’ which was performed by Mario and consequently topped all charts. Following his success with this single, he received an invitation from Def Jam Records and later signed a contract with the same label. His first solo album called ‘In my own words’ hit the stores in 2006 and included hit singles like “So Sick” and “Sexy Love”, both of which gained number one position on almost every radio chart in the United States. His next studio work was released in the following year and was titled “Because of You”. By the end quarter of 2008, Ne-Yo had finished working on his third album called “Year of the Gentlemen”.
Rising of a star
Ne-Yo was born in a family of two talented musicians in Arkansas. Even though Ne-Yo went to become a star, his parents were rather unnoticed in the music industry. After his parents got divorced, he went to live with his single mother. His mother wasn’t able to support them in Camden so she decided to relocate to Las Vegas. Although the city didn’t take notice of her musical talents but it did her great favor by sending her son to a career path which eventually made Ne-Yo a star. He started his musical career while he was still studying in Las Vegas Academy. He also joined an R&B group Envy during his final year and adopted a pseudonym ‘GoGo’. However, it didn’t quite work out as the band dismantled even before he graduated and the 18 year old boy had to continue his career as a songwriter.
A couple of months in 2000 seemed like a silver lining for him as he signed a deal with Columbia Records. But unfortunately, for some unknown reasons his contract was terminated right before his debut album could release and his dreams of becoming a singer had to halt again. In order to earn some extra bucks, he had to sell the rights of his own song “That Girl” which he planned to release as his lead single. The song was later recorded by Marques Houston and when released with his album HM, topped all charts making Ne-Yo one of the most sought after songwriter in America. This was his breakthrough into the American music industry and since then his net worth had only been going up.
Climbing the success ladder
After his breakthrough in the music industry as a songwriter, Ne-Yo grabbed a chance to release his own solo album titled ‘In my Words’ in 2006. The album instantly topped Billboards 200 due to hit numbers like “Sexy Love” and “So Sick”. Right after its release in the first week the album sold over 300 thousand copies. A pretty bulk of Ne-Yo’s net worth can be credited to the sales of this album. He released his second album called ‘Because of You’ a year later. His third album titled ‘Year of the Gentlemen’ was released in 2008. The album again became a bestseller due to hit numbers like ‘Miss Independent’, ‘Mad’ and ‘come closer’. ‘Libra Scale’ -his fourth album reached 9th position on US Billboard 200 chart. Ne-Yo has also collaborated with rapper Pitbull and given out hit singles like Give Me Everything which reached #1 on Billboard Hot 100.
He has also tried his hand in acting with making small appearances in movies like Save the Last Dance 2, Stomp the Yard and Nick Cannon. He has also appeared in various TV series which include 90210, CSI: NY, Red Trails, The X Factor etc among others.
