CHILDHOOD
Sig Hansen was born to Sverre Hansen and Snefryd Hansen in Seattle. He was eldest of three sons (Sigurd, Edgar and Norman) born to them. His family descended from a long lineage of Norwegian ancestry Fishermen. His Father and grandfather were involved opilio crab fishing in Alaska. He too began fishing at the age of 14, mostly working on his family’s boat. After graduating from Shorewood High School, he began fishing in Alaska and Bering Sea.During the summer, he would fish mackerel and cod in Norway. He liked fishing so much that he would bunk classes at school to go fishing.
REALIZING HIS PASSION
Hansen started experimenting in his father’s boat during his early years to face the strong sea. At the age of 22,he became a “relief skipper” on the Northwestern.
At 24, he had taken charge of Northwestern full time and as the years passed by, the Northwestern had become the top producer with an excellent saftey record. The Northwestern has never had a single death at sea in nearly 20 years and its serious injury rate is significantly lower as compared to other boats in the Bering Sea fleet. The Northwestern also won the titles for the highest poundage caught and the highest dollars earned between the featured boats in the Deadliest Catch in 2005 ( for King Crab) and 2006 (for Opilio).
Sig Hansen serves as the full time captain during the king and opilio crab seasons, as well as the pot cod fishery on the Northwestern. Edgar and Norman, his younger brothers work as deck boss and deckhand respectively. Sig is a passionate,hard-working captain who can work in extreme conditions. To be a successful fisherman, you need to be a mechanic, navigator, welder, painter, carpenter, and at times, fire fighter.
In March 2010, Hansen released his book, North By Northwestern: A Seafaring Family on Deadly Alaskan Waters, co-written by Mark Sundeen through which he became one of the most renowned published author.
This also made way for his book to reach the bestseller lists of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. This is story of a family of survivors; part memoir and part adventure tale. North by Northwestern is the multi-generational tale of the Hansen’s family.Their story from being Norwegian fishermen to having become modern folk-heroes. No doubt, his book must have sold like hot cakes!!!
On April 29, 2010, Sig Hansen was also chosen to be the guest on a show- “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. During the show,he expressed his desire to be a contestant on the ABC reality television show- Dancing with the Stars. Such was his desire that, Leno’s staff went on to set up a Facebook page to gather support for Hansen to be voted to appear on the show. In September 2010, Hansen announced that he would stop appearing on the Deadliest Catch. However, on October 8, it was announced that he would return to the show.
