Thomas William  Selleck, Amrican actor and producer, best known for his role as the private investigator  ’Thomas Magnum’ in the TV series Magnum P.I. based in Hawaii. Born on January 29, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan his family moved to Sherman Oaks, California during his childhood. He graduated from Grant High School and attended University of Southern California. He also served as a soldier in the 160th Infantry Regiment of the California Army National Guard and his unit as activated for the Watts Riots in Los Angeles. Tom Selleck, is as famous for his moustache as he is for his TV and film roles.

TV Appearances and Films

Tom’s first TV appearance was as a college senior on The Dating Game in 1965, and again in 1967. He also appeared in commercials for products like Pepsi-Cola. He started his career with smaller movies like Myra Breckinridge and The Seven Minutes. He appeared in a number of TV series, TV mini-series and TV movies. His first big break came when he was cast in the lead role as Thomas Magnum in Magnum P.I. He passed on the enticing film project for the role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark because the producers of Magnum P.I. would not release him for other projects. Indiana Jones then went to rising star Harrison Ford. Selleck had a recurring role on the series The Rockford Files, in which he played the character of private investigator ‘Lance White’.

He then appeared, extensively, on television in roles such as “Dr. Richard Burke” on F.R.I.E.N.D.S (1994) and A.J Cooper on Las Vegas (2003).  Since 2005, Selleck has starred in the role of transplanted lawman ‘Jesse Stone’ in a series of movies based on Robert B. Parker’s novels. To date the series comprises of eight films, with the most recent released on May 20, 2012. He has appeared on more than 50 made-for-TV movies, including Mr. Baseball (1992), Quigley Down Under (1990), Lassiter (1984) and among his most notable movies were, Runaway and 3 Men and A Baby (1987). 3 Men and A Baby was the highest grossing movie in 1987.

He did a couple of leading-man cowboy roles in Western films. His first role as a cowboy and frontier marshall ‘Orrin Sackett’ was in the 1979 film The Sacketts opposite Sam Elliott, Jeff Osterhage and Western legends Glenn Ford and Ben Johnson. Quigley Down Under is probably one of his best known Western films. He most recently appeared in the movie Killers with Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher.

Tom rejected a couple of lead roles which went on to become very popular. Selleck was offered the role of ‘Mitch Buchannon’ in Baywatch, but turned it down because he did not want to be seen as a sex symbol. The role went to David Hasselhoff. Tom also turned down the role of Richard on the TV show Titans (2000).

When he was in his senior year at University of Southern California, Selleck earned a basketball scholarship after walking onto the team as a junior.

His trademarks, other than the mustache are Hawaiian shirt, Detroit Tigers Baseball cap and hairy chest.

He has studied acting at The Beverly Hills Playhouse with Milton Katselas.

He is also a member at the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

He played competitive volleyball with the Outrigger Canoe Club and was a three-time All American selection, twice winning the over-35 division in the National Championships.

Selleck starred in six failed TV pilots before landing his first breakthrough role in Magnum P.I..

Among his very rare appearances without the mustache are on the film In and Out (1997), in the Broadway show A Thousand Clowns in 2001, and on Charlie’s Angels: Target: Angels in 1976.

From 1971 to 1982, Selleck was married to model Jacqueline Ray. During that time, he adopted her son, Kevin Shepard.

In August, 1987 Selleck married Jillie Mack. They have one daughter, Hannah Margaret Selleck.

His parents were Robert and Martha Selleck. His father was manager of the San Fernando Valley office of a prestigious commercial real estate company.

Tom’s father had English, with a smaller amount of German, ancestry. All four of Tom’s maternal great-grandparents were English immigrants.

He has a German shepherd named “Ooma”

He is an accomplished indoor and beach volleyball player playing the outside hitter position for the Outrigger Canoe Club, Honolulu. He is also an avid Ice hockey fan and often attends Los Angeles Kings games at the Staples Centre.

For a number of years, Selleck appeared in television advertising for National Review. He endorsed Senator John McCain in the 2008 presidential election. Selleck describes himself politically as “a registered independent with a lot of liberterian leanings.”

 

Awards and Recognition

He “won” a Worst Supporting Actor Razzie Award for his role in Christopher Columbus: The Discovery (1992), Selleck became one of the first stars, ever, to accept the $4.97 dis-honor.

On April 28, 2000, he received an honorary doctorate from Pepperdine University. He was chosen because of his outstanding character and ethic. He is a board member of the non-profit Joseph and Edna Josephson Institute of Ethics and co-founder of the Character Counts Coalition.

Tom Selleck received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986.

Won the 36th Primetime Emmy Award in 1986 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Won the 42nd Golden Globe Award (1985) for Best Performance by an actor in a TV-Series-Drama.

Also won the People’s Choice Award for two consecutive years; 1984 and 1985 for Favorite Male TV Performer.
