Nelly Furtado was born on 2^nd November 1978 in Victoria, British Colombia, Canada. Her mother, Maria Manuela and father Antonio Jose Furtado. Both her parents are Portuguese, who migrated from Azores and Sao MiguelIsland to Canada at the time of 1960’s. Nelly was named after a Soviet Gymnast Nellie Kim. Nelly has two siblings who are Michael Anthony and Lisa Anne. Nelly and her two siblings were raised as Roman Catholics. At age of 4, Nelly started performing and singing in Portuguese. She began playing musical instruments at the age of 9.At the age of 12 itself she started writing songs and performing on the stage shows held at her home town and near by places. She mentioned her family as her Strong ethic. She also spent 8 summers working as a chambermaid along with her mother, brother and sister who was a housekeeper in Victoria. So, she relates her hard working nature to her past which shaped her identity today as leading singer in a positive way. She got graduated from MountDouglasSecondary School in 1996.

MUSIC CAREER:

When she was young she joined a trip-hop group and started giving her vocals to their albums , but she later left the group as she was not allowed to show case her own talent . Later, in 1997 she performed at Honey Jam Talent show which grabbed the attention of a singer Gerald Eaton, who approached her to write songs. After that there was twist in her life, her dream of becoming a singer came true she was signed for dream records in collaboration with Gerald Eaton and Brian West. Her first single “Party just begun” was released in 1999.In 2000 she debuted her first album named “Whoa!Nelly” which received world wide success with three singles turn Off the light, On the Radio and I’m Like a bird. Her debut album received two Grammy award nominations world wide and her debut single won the best female vocal performance. She received good applause from people all around for her innovative way of mixing various genres and sounds in her songs. All her songs represented mostly heart felt emotional music .Her debut album sold about 6 million copies all around the world. Nelly released her second album Folklore in 2003,this album was not so successful as the debut album as it dint feature any extra ordinary sounds and mixtures of genres as people expected from the debut album, it was little emotional and slow  so the response for her second album was low when compared to first one. This happened because the label company DreamWorks Records for which Nelly was working has been sold by Universal Music Group. I n 2005 many of the artists who were working with  DreamWorks Records along with Nelly Furtado started absorbing to Geffen Records. She released her third album “Loose” in 2006. She worked with Timbaland in making this album. This album became huge success to Nelly and earned lots of name and positive comments from the audience. In 2009 she released her first debut Spanish album Mi Plan. In 2012 she released her next English album Spirit Indestructible.

PERSONAL LIFE:

Nelly Furtado was in relationship with her boy friend Jasper Gahunia. They both were good friends for several years. In 2003 Nelly Forted gave birth to daughter Nevis Chetan in Toronto. After 4 years they broke up and decided to remain only as friends .In 2008 Nelly married a Jamaican sound engineer Demacio Castellon.
