Tiesto, birth name Tijs Michiel Verwest is a Dutch DJ and Record producer. He was born on January 17, 1969, in Breda, North Brabant, Netherlands. He began his career as a DJ playing at a small club in his hometown. He used various names such as Allure, Da Joker, DJ Limited, Wild Bunch, DJ Cash and DJ Tiesto. He was best known for his work as DJ Tiesto. He began releasing singles in the 90s under these different names and was subsequently discovered by the manager of Basic Beat Recordings. Over the next half decade, he began to do a lot of work as a producer and started establishing sub-labels. He produced a lot of gabber tracks under the name Da Joker and DJ Limited. At Basic Beat Recordings, Tiesto met Arny Bink. Tiesto started releasing records under Arny’s record label Trashcan. Basic Beat Recordings had established their own record label ‘Guardian Angel’ which they used to put out the Forbidden Paradise & Lost Treasures series’ – including vinyls of the tracks off the album the label Guardian Angel.
In 1997, Tiesto founded Black Hole Recordings with Arny Bink and left Basic Beat Recordings. Under Black Hole Recordings they started the famous Magik series where they created the ‘Magik Sound’ while Basic Beat continued with the Forbidden Paradise series without Tiesto. In the following year, two major sub-labels were created by Tiesto; In Trance, We Trust and SongBird. Towards the end of the decade he collaborated with other DJ’s like Ferry Corsten for Gouryella and Benno De Goeji. During the same time, he performed monthly as a resident DJ at the popular Gatecrasher club in England.
He decided to focus on his solo work in 2000, and became an international sensation after DJing at the first “Live at InnerCity: Amsterdam RAI” event. In 2001, he released his first solo album In My Memory. Some of the singles from the album were Flight 643, Lethal Industry, Obsession, In My Memory and the opening track Magik Journey.
His second studio album was Just Be which he released in 2004 at the Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He became the first DJ to play live on stage at an Olympics Games. Tiesto specially composed some tracks that complemented the spirit and theme of the Opening ceremony, which were later released, along with some new songs, in a studio album entitles Parade of the Athletes. This album contained the track Traffic which is the first non-vocal track to reach number one spot in the Dutch national charts for 23 years. In 2004, May 20, he was appointed as Officer of the military and civil Dutch order of chivalry ‘Order of the Orange-Nassau’ by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
In April of 2007, Tiesto launched his own weekly two hour radio show Tiesto’s Club Life on Dutch Radio 538. In the same month, he released his third artist album Elements of Life. This album consisted of rock and trance elements which showed clear progress and growth in Tiesto’s style. The album topped the Dutch album chart and “Billboard Top Electronic Albums” in the U.S. Later that year, the album was also nominated for a Grammy Award under the category “Best Electronic/Dance Album.” He started a Elements of Life World Tour which had shows across the world. They later released a DVD of Tiesto’s show at Copenhagen, Denmark during the tour.
Two years later, in 2009, Tiesto released his fourth album Kaleidoscope. This album featured many famous artists such as Calvin Harris, Nelly Furtado and Priscilla Ahn. Kaleidoscope was considered to be Tiesto’s most experimental album as it explored electronic genres other than Trance. This album was released on the label ‘Musical Freedom’. He parted ways with Black Hole Recordings the same year. In the following year, Tiesto released his album Magikal Journey: The Hits Collection 1998-2008 comprising of his most famous songs and remixes of his songs.

Tiesto earns an average of $250,000 per night; low production costs let him keep the bulk of that sum. He roughly earns $20 million per year off merchandise, album sales, licensing and touring. With over 100 shows in the past year, he’s the top-earning electronic musician on Forbes list; he also benefits from a strong social media presence that includes over 1 million Twitter followers and 12 million Facebook fans. Tiesto flies around the world in a customized private Gulfstream jet. A custom Cessna Citation XLS was built by JetNetherlands for Tiesto’s 2010 European Tour. The jet included a custom paint job with headphones and his name.

Tiesto had a relationship with the beauty contest winner Monique Spronk. He almost got married to his girlfriend Stacey Blokzijl in October 2008. Around Christmas 2008 Stacey Blokzijl broke up with Tiesto because of the constant delay of their wedding.
Tiësto opened a club-restaurant acquisition with Chinese cuisine, dance music and live entertainment on June 7, 2007 called Cineac. It is now called “The Mansion.”
Tiesto also collaborated with fashion designer Giorgio Armani on a limited edition Tiësto T-shirt available at Armani Exchange stores.
