BIRTH AND EARLY LIFE:

Gabrielle Union was born on October 29, 1972 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was born to Theresa who was a former dancer, social worker and a phone company manager and Sylvester C. Union who was an AT&T manager and military sergeant. She was the middle child in a family of four daughters. She spent her early childhood in Omaha area and was moved along with her family to Pleasanton, California when she was eight years old. She was raised Catholic. She attended the Foothill High School in Pleasanton and have remained an all-star point guard in basketball and a year-round athlete during her school days. She also was playing soccer and running track.

COLLEGE DAYS AND ACTING CAREER:

Gabrielle attended University of Nebraska, where she played on the soccer team, before transferring to Cuesta College. She eventually transferred to UCLA and earned a degree in sociology with honors. During her studies in her senior year, she joined as an intern at the Judith Fotaine Modeling & Talent Agency. By the time she completed her internship at the agency, she was invited by the agency owner, Judith Fontaine to work as a model for the agency. Soon Gabrielle accepted the offer thinking it would be an easy way to pay off her college loans. She modeled until her agent discovered she had a talent for acting.

Gabrielle’s acting career was launched when she landed a small, uncredited role on the sitcom Family Matters. Over the next few years many more television roles came. Her first major film role was in the 1999 movie She’s All That.

Some of her other earlier roles included those in teen movies such as 10 Things I Hate About You and Love and Basketball. In 1997, Union appeared in the sixth-season episode of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – “Sons and Daughters” as the Klingon N’Garen. She also appeared in Sister, Sister as Vanessa, in Smart Guy as Denise, and in five episodes of 7th Heaven as Keesha Hamilton.

She was cast in her first leading role in the film Deliver Us From Eva in the year 2003. The film received fair reviews from critics. She then acted the role of Will Smith’s character’s girlfriend Syd in the box office success film Bad Boys 2. She also then acted with Jamie Foxx in the film Breakin’ All The Rules in 2004.

She has by then acted in a number of films with a good receipt of appreciations by her fans and viewers.

VICTIM OF RAPE & WORKING FOR CAUSES:

Gabrielle in the year 1992 was attacked and raped at the age of 19 during her part time job in a shoe store. The attacker was later sentenced a 33 years of imprisonment. She then has started working towards the survivors of such assaults. She is an ambassador for the Cure’s Circle of Promise. She also ran in the Global Race for the Cure in Washington D.C. on Saturday, June 2, 2012, in honor of her late friend Kristen Martinez, who lost her battle with breast cancer.

Gabrielle gathered a team for the 2007 Lee National Denim Day in support of the Women’s Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. She is also an activist for women’s issues, speaking out in particular about violence against women.

She got married with Chris Howard, a NFL player on May 5, 2001 and also got separated in October 2005. Divorce was finalized in 2006. She then started dating NBA player Dwyane Wade and both got engaged in December 2013.
