Nasir bin olu dara Jones, popularly known as Nas or Nasty Nas, is an American rapper and song-writer. Nas has sold about 25 million records worldwide and has 8 consecutive multi-platinum albums. He is also an entrepreneur through his own recording company, sneaker shoes and magazine. He is consistently regarded as one of the greatest rappers Hip Hop has ever discovered. He is known for his dense lyrics and story telling abilities. His debut album, Illmatic, which was released in 1994 is regarded as one of the greatest Hip Hop albums ever. His subsequent album, It was written, peaked at number 1 on the billboard charts. MTV ranked him at number 5 on the list of The Greatest MCs of All Time.

Early Life

Nas was born on September 14, 1973 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York. He is the son of the Jazz musician, Sir Olu Dara. Nas’s parents divorced in 1985 and he dropped out of school in 8th grade. He educated himself about the African culture, and thoroughly studied The Quran and The Bible. He was massively interested in Hip hop during his teenage days.

In 2013, Nas venntured in the field of magazines. He invested a six figure sum into Mass Appeal Magazine and serves as its Executive publisher. He recently announced on twitter that he will be opening his own Retail sneaker store, collaborating with Fila. He also struck a deal with the online retail company 12Society.com. In september 2013, he invested in a technology startup company, a job search appmaker named ‘Proven’. He is also a partner in the ‘Rock the bell’ music festival.

Personal life

In 1994, Nas’s fiancée’ Carmen Bryan gave birth to their first daughter, Destiny. However, the couple split later. In 2012, Nas became the first rapper to have a personally verified account on rapgenius.com, where he personally explained many of his lyrics. Nas married the R&B singer Kelis after a 2 year relationship. Kelis gave birth to Nas’s first son in 2009. However, the couple divorced thereafter. In May 2013, Nas announced that he will open a sneaker store in Las Vegas called 12AM RUN( midnight run). The Harvard University honored Nas and created Nasir Jones Hip Hop fellowship which help students to attain a career in the Hip Hop industry.

Fued with Jay Z

Nas was involved in a highly publicized feud with Jay Z. Jay Z in his song ‘Takeover’ called Nas fake and his career stupid. Nas responded with ‘ Ether’ in which he compared Jay Z to characters such as J.J. Evans. Jay Z replied to it in his track ‘ Supa ugly’ in which he mentions that he had a romantic relationship with Nas’s then girlfriend, Carmen Bryan. A new York Hip Hop station conducted a poll to rate the better track, 58 % of the people voted in favor of Nas. The feud and the album Stillmatic lead Nas to comeback as an artist. Stillmatic received rave reviews from critics and sold numerous copies. Eminem regarded Nas and Jay Z as the best rappers ever in the song Till I collapse from the Eminem Show. Jay Z and Nas ended their feud when Nas appeared in a show along with Jay Z and they both performed together.

Distant relatives and Life is good

Nas collaborated with reggae artist, Damien Martin, in 2010 and released the album ‘ Distant relatives’. The album received positive reviews from critics and sold decent copies. Nas said in an interview, “I was a big fan of his father and of course all the children, all the offspring, and Damian, I kind of looked at Damian as a rap guy. His stuff is not really singing, or if he does, it comes off more hard, like on some street shit. I always liked how reggae and hip-hop have always been intertwined and always kind of pushed each other, I always liked the connection. I’d worked with people before from the reggae world but when I worked with Damian, the whole workout was perfect”. A part of the profit earned from this album was donated to build a school in Africa.
