Long was born in Brooklyn and her parents were Talita, a teacher and printmaker, and Doughtry ‘Doc’ Long, a high school teacher and poet. Her family belongs to Afro-Trinidadian origin. Her name Nia means purpose in Swahili. She was only 2 years old when her parents get divorced. So she moved to Iowa City, Iowa with her mother where her mother teaches fine arts. Then she moved to South Los Angeles at seven years of age where her mother was supposed to get married. The marriage was called off but they stayed in Los Angeles as Nia felt in love with the place. Presently Long’s father resides in Trenton, New Jersey. Her half-sister is comedienne Sommore, i.e. one of the stars of ‘The Queen of Comedy’. As per her schooling, Nia attended the Roman Catholic school St. Mary’s Academy and learned ballet, tap, jazz, gymnastic, guitar and acting. She had done her graduation from Westchester High school in 1989. Long developed an interest in acting at a very early age. She had received training from Betty bridges who is the mother of former child star odd Bridges (famous for the role in TV series ‘Different Strokes’). She started her career TV shows, playing a character in a soap Opera Guiding Light. She was there for 2 years. She earned her fame due to her acting in the famous sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel Air, in which she was opposite to Will Smith. She made her film debut in Boyz ‘N the Hood (1991). She had appeared then in Made in America (1993).Long had established herself in romantic dramas and comedies, carving out a role in such movies, like Love Jones in the year 1997, Soul Food in the year 1997, and The Best Man in the year 1999. The artist also had volunteered into a number of other fields, as proven by her roles in films ranging from supernatural horror Stigmata in the year 1999 to big business crime drama The Boiler Room in 1999 to inner-city police thriller In Too Deep in the year 1999. Los Angeles is now home for her, where she lives with her 2 sons, Massai (12 year old), Kez (14 months old) and husband Ime Udoka, an Assistant Coach for the San Antonio Spurs. She loves to chef organic farmer’s market fresh food adding a twist of her Trinidadian tradition. She enjoys doing boxing, pilates, hiking, and horse riding. Long also finds immense pleasure in traveling and experiencing different religions throughout the world. One of her favourite place to visit is Jamaica, a site where she feels like second home, where she can reflect and refill.

Besides her film and TV work, Long possess a great desire to serve her community. Having her roots in Trinidad, Long’s long term objectives are to link women in the US to those of the island and to guide young girls to regain their confidence. Add to that, Long gives her support to Black Girls Rock, a union that encourages the arts for young women of color and boosts dialogue on the ways women of color are depicted in the media. In 2012 she was entitled as an official surrogate to the Barack Obama re-election movement.
