Born as Roseanne Cherrie Barr, is a lady of many hats. She is not only an actor and comedian but also she works as a director, producer and writer. She is popularly known as Roseanne Barr.
Early life and career
Roseanne was born on November 3, 1952 in the Salt Lake City, Utah, United States to Helen (née Davis) and Jerome Hershel “Jerry” Barr. She basically belongs to a Jewish family. Her grandparents were immigrants from Europe and Russia. Roseanne’s mother was a bookkeeper and cashier whereas her father Jerome worked as a salesman. Helen and Jerry gave birth to four children. Among all four children, Roseanne was the oldest. Barr’s maternal grandmother was of orthodox nature and because of this orthodox nature her upbringings was influenced. Even her parents hid their Jewish culture from others. “Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning I was a Jew; Sunday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon, and Wednesday afternoon we were Mormons”, Roseanne Barr stated. Barr attended Salt Lake High School East.
She started her career in Colorado. She reached there after experiencing an accident at the age of 16. The accident she suffered caused her a traumatic brain injury. Her injury was so severe that she was kept at Utah State Hospital, her behavior was changed radically. But soon in 1970 she made a excuse of visiting her friend in Colorado for two weeks to her parents and then never returned. In Colorado and Denver she worked as stand-up comedian at various clubs. After working as a stand-up comedian she tried her skill in various shows such as The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, The Tonight Show in 1985, Late Night with David Letterman (1986) and The Roseanne Barr Show. With her last work she was highly appreciated and after receiving so much appreciation she released her own sitcom on ABC titled “Roseanne”. The phrase “domestic goddess” was also popularized by this stand-up comedian. The phrase was used to refer to a homemaker or housewife. In 1987, she was signed for the play Roseanne Conner, which was written to bring “no-perks family comedy” to television. This play became the highest-rated debut of that season attracting 21.4 million households.
Barr’s sitcom became very famous and was aired until its nine seasons starting from the year 1988 and ending in 1997. In the year 1989 she released her autobiography, Roseanne—My Life As a Woman. She also worked as a voice actress in Look Who’s Talking Too for a baby Julie in 1991. Her second book named My Lives was released in 1994. Apart from working in various shows, the comedian also made guest appearances in many shows like 3rd Rock from the Sun and The Nanny in 1987. Then the next year she appeared on The Roseanne Show, her own talk show. Her talk show lasted for two years and after that in 2005 she again stared working as a comedian. Then in England she performed a first live dates in 2006. Then in year 2007 the third season of The Search for the Funniest Mom in America on Nick at Nite was hosted by Barr. Starting from year 2008 she got combined with Johnny Argent to host a radio show known as “The Roseanne and Johnny Show”, which was aired on Sundays only.
Besides hosting comedy based shows she also hosted political theme based radio show from 2009 to 2010. In 2010 she also appeared in a documentary of Jordan Brady’s titled I Am Comic. The following year she released Roseannearchy: Dispatches from the Nut Farm, her third book.
Barr worked as an actress in several movies such as She-Devil (1989), Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991), Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1993), Blue in the Face (1995), Joe Dirt (2001), Home on the Range (2004) and A Diary Tale in 2004.
Personal life
Barr married a motel clerk, Bill Pentland in 1974. The couple met in Colorado. Barr has three children with Pentland; Jessica, Jennifer, and Jake. Before meeting and marrying Pentland, Roseanne was pregnant when she was 17. She placed the girl child (Brandi) for adoption but was later reunited. Bill’s and Barr’s marriage got ended in the year 1990. Soon after divorcing with Pentland, Barr again got married just after four days of her divorce. This time she got married to Tom Arnold, her fellow comedian. After marrying him she was known as Roseanne Arnold. Both Roseanne and Arnold met in Minneapolis in 1983. Arnold opened a stand-up comedy act for her in Minneapolis. And in 1988, Arnold worked as a writer in Barr’s sitcom “Roseanne”. She introduced the gay characters in Roseanne, her sitcom. She got this idea and inspiration from his brother, Ben Barr and her sister, Geraldine Barr. This was so because both her brother and sister were a gay and lesbian, respectively. Barr also was in a favor of gay marriage, as stated by her.
She soon gave divorce to the Arnold because of the irreconcilable differences between them. Roseanne didn’t give birth to any child with Arnold. In the year 1995, Roseanne Barr got married for the third time. This time Barr got married to her one-time personal security guard, Ben Thomas. During this she got pregnant through in-vitro fertilization and gave birth to a baby boy, Buck. They both got separated in the year 2002.
After one year, in 2003 Roseanne started dating Johnny Argent, whom she met online in 2002 while running a writing competition on her blog.
Also the actress Roseanne Barr has undergone various cosmetic surgeries such as breast reduction, tummy tuck, nose job and gastric bypass surgery.

The comedian and actress, Roseanne has won many awards. She got her first award (American Comedy Award) in 1988 for Funniest Female Performer in a TV Special. She then received a number of awards for her sitcom Roseanne, American Comedy Award for Funniest Female Performer in a TV Series in 1989, People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Female Performer in a New TV Program (1989), People’s Choice Awards (1990) for Favorite Female TV Performer and Favorite All-Around Female Entertainer, 1993 American Comedy Award for Funniest Female Performer in a TV Series, GLAAD Media Awards for Vanguard Award in the same year, Emmy Award in the same year 1993 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Golden Globe Award again in 1993 for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy. In 1994, she again won the People’s Choice Awards category Favorite Female TV Performer for Roseanne. She again received People’s Choice Awards in 1995 for her sitcom Roseanne under the category Favorite Female TV Performer. Apart from winning so many awards she was also nominated for her other works such as The Roseanne Show, Look Who’s Talking Too.
