Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch is the Sherlock that we see in the amazing series of Sherlock Holmes since the year 2010, a personal favorite! His British accent can charm the wits of any woman. Cumberbatch had a very humble beginning of his acting career. He is a theatre and voice actor.  He has been a part of films like Amazing Grace, Atonement, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, War Horse and so on. Cumberbatch has won a Oliver Award for Best Actor. In 2013 alone, he starred in the movies 12 Years a Slave, August Osage County, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Fifth Estate. His acting has been termed as “masterful” by some of the critics!


Cumberbatch was born in London, to the proud parents Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch and Wanda Ventham. He was always interested in acting. He made his stage debut at the tender age of 12 as one of the Fairies in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He started training as an actor, after graduating from University of Manchester, at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.


Cumberbatch is more of a theatre personality, and less of a commercial actor. The commercial aspect of acting was started being exploited only recently. Talking about Cumberbatch’s work in the theatre, he bagged major roles in a lot of classic plays like Hedda Gabler, After The Dance, The Children’s Monologues, Frankenstein, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and the list goes on.Cumberbatch is making a “comeback” to theatre with Shakespeare’s play Hamlet in the last 2014.

Cumberbatch appeared as a guest roles in Television series like Heartbeat, Tipping the Velvet, Cambridge Species, Fortysomething. In 2005, he starred in the miniseries called To The Ends Of The Earth. He also starred in Stuart: A Life Backwards, in 2007. As Luke Fitzgerald, he starred in the series Marple: Murder Is Easy. The year 2010 has played a very important in Cumberbatch’s career. In portrayed the character in Vincent van Gogh in Van Gogh: Painted With Word and he started portraying the famous detective Sherlock Holmes in the series name Sherlock. This role in particular has brought Cumberbatch a lot of fame and critical acclaim. It is such a grasping role, which can be enjoyed by people of all age groups. His latest work is in Count von Count for PBS.

Cumberbatch got his first major movie in 2006 in the movie Amazing Grace. Following the movie, he was a part of a lot of movie as well. Some of the movies include Atonement, The Other Boleyn Girl, The Whistleblower, Creation, An Unexpected Journey, War Horse, Star Trek Into Darkness, 12 Years A Slave, August:Osage County and so on.

Benedict Cumberbatch has also signed a lot of other movies that are scheduled for 2014-2015 like The Imitation Game, The Lost City of Z and Blood Mountain.

Cumberbatch launched a production company along with the best friend Adam Ackland, named SunnyMarch Ltd in the later half of the year 2013. After Cumberbatch’s recognition as Sherlock Holmes, he is often called as “The Thinking Woman’s Crumpet.” Since then, he has also been the target of cyberstalking.


Cumberbatch has not really been lucky in matter of love. He met Olivia Poulet while at the university and they broke up after being together for over a period of 12 years. Afterwards, he dated Anna James for around an year but, they separated as well. Cumberbatch believes in Buddhism and is in favor of meditation.

Cumberbatch is a philanthropist as well. He believes in giving back to the community. He has been an active participant in various organizations like The Prince’s Trust, Stop The War Coalition, and Motor Neurone Disease Association.
