He is a survivor of USAir Flight 1493 in the year 1991. He was born in Wichita, Kansas and was born to mother, Mary and Fred Chase Koch who was a chemical engineer. He has 3 more siblings. He went MIT and earned a bachelors in the year 1962 and a master degree in the year 1963 in chemical engineering. Not only is this, he is a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. In the year 1970, he joined Koch Industries and after nine years, he became the President of Koch Engineering.

Talking about his philanthropy he donated $20 million to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore and a total of $185 million to MIT since joining the MIT Corporation in 1988.
