I think any actor worth their salt wants to show as much versatility as they possibly can. Such is the case with veteran actor Allen Kelsey Grammer. He is best known for his two-decade portrayal of psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane on the NBC sitcoms “Cheers” and “Frasier”. He was born on February 21, 1955 at Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

The estimated net worth of Kelsey Grammer is $120 million. Grammer is said to have snapped up a $6.5 million home in Beverly Hills for his Los Angeles base.


The 57 year old actor and his fourth wife Kayte Walsh are primarily based in New York.

Grammer also owns a “modern, traditional” Holmbly Hills estate which was built in 1980 in Los Angeles.

Early Life

Grammer is the son of Sally, who was a renowned singer, and Frank Allen Grammer, Jr. who was a musician and owner of a coffee shop and a bar and grill called Greer’s Place. Grammer was two years old when his parents got divorced. Grammer attended Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and later spent two years at the Juilliard School. He has done three year internship with the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in the late 1970s before a stint in 1980 at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Grammer was raised by his mother and Grandfather, after his parents’ divorce. Unfortunately, his Grandfather died when he was 11.

When Grammer was 20 years old, his younger sister, Karen Grammer, who was then 18 year old, was raped by four men and murdered by Freddie Lee Glenn.




Grammer made his Broadway debut in 1981 as “Lennox”, Macbeth. Grammer played Michael Cassio in a Broadway revival of “Othello”. In 1983, he performed on the demo of the production “Sunday in the Park with George”. In 2000, Grammer again played Macbeth on Broadway.



Grammer made his Broadway musical debut in Jerry Herman/Harvey Fierstein musical “La Cage aux Folles”, for which he was nominated for a “Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical”.


Grammer’s television career began in the early 1980s when he portrayed Stephen Smith in the NBC miniseries “Kennedy”.


The “Cheers and Frasier” Fame


The fictional character “Dr. Frasier Crane” brought Grammer Broadway attention. He got what was supposed to be a six episode job, but ended up as a regular cast member. The character became the center of the spin-off “Frasier”, one of the most successful spin-off in the television history. Dr. Frasier Crane has become one of the television’s most endearing and enduring characters.

He joined the cast of “Cheers” (1982) in 1984.



In 1996, he hosted an hour-long salute to Jack Benny for which he served as executive producer.

Besides being a producer, he has also made guest appearances in “Medium” and in the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” episode “Cause and Effect”.


While working as a cast member in “Frasier”, he also directed more than 30 episodes of the serial, especially during the second half of the series. He also sang the closing theme “Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs”. The character “Frasier” won and was nominated for many awards during its 11 year run.

Post “Frasier” Career

After Frasier, Grammer produced and appeared in an American adaption of the British show “The Sketch Show”, in the year 2005.

In 2011 and 2012, Grammer starred in the Starz drama series “Boss”. The show ran for 18 episodes over two seasons.

Grammer is the first actor to receive multiple Emmy nominations for performing the same role on three series. He is a five time Emmy Award winner. In addition to his Emmys, Grammer has won two “Golden Globe Awards”, two “American Comedy Awards” and a “People’s Choice Award for his portrait”.

His autobiography, “So Far”, was published in 1995.

Grammer has been married four times and has five children and one grandchild. His current and fourth wife is a British flight attendant Kayte Walsh. She is 25 years his junior. The couple got married on February 25, 2011, two weeks after the finalization of his third divorce. The wedding took place at the ballroom of the “Plaza Hotel” at a cost of more than $100,000.

Health Problems

On May31, 2008 Grammer experienced a heart attack. On June 28, 2008, he was again reported to be hospitalized for irregular heartbeat.

Active Politics

Grammer is also a member of the Republican Party and has expressed an interest in someday running for United States Congress. He was also a guest at President George W. Bush’s first inauguration. He has also actively campaigned for John McCain in the general election.
