The ‘ Thrift shop’ fame rapper is a household name in the world today. Macklemore( Real name Ben Haggerty) is an American rapper. His song ‘ Thrift shop’ reached number 1 on the Billboard recently. It is the first song since 1994 to achieve this status without a major record label. His recently released album ‘ The Heist’ has received massive awards and accolades. His single ‘ Can’t hold us’ reached # 1 on the Billboard chart as well. He released the album along with the producer, Ryan Lewis. Macklemore was Born and raised in Washington D.C. His parents were very supportive of his music ventures. He first listened to Hip Hop music when he was six years old. He started writing lyrics at the age of fourteen. “Music is therapy. Music moves people. It connects people in ways that no other medium can. It pulls heart strings. It acts as medicine” he said in a recent interview. He released his first E.P. in the year 2000 named, Open your eyes. He then released a full length album named, The language of my world, in 2005. He met the producer, Ryan lewis, in 2006. They became good friends and started doing music together. In September 2009, they released The Unplanned Mixtape. A few tracks gave them some Underground attention.
The Heist
Macklemore and Ryan lewi released The Heist without a major label in 2012. Many tracks from the album such as ‘ Same love’, ‘ Can’t hold us’, ‘ Thrift shop’ became famous. The album won numerous awards and accolades, including 4 Grammy awards. Macklemore performed “Same Love” at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. Queen Latifah read marriage vows for 33 couples who lined the aisles. Thrift shop earned certification for 7 million downloads sold in the United States. The Heist sold more than 1 million copies in the United States. It was nominated for 7 awards in the Grammy’s. Macklemore said in an interview that he and Lewis would commence working on a new album once they have taken a break after The Heist Tour. Macklemore told that the album would take about three years to complete.
Personal life
Macklemore got engaged to his girlfriend of seven years on Jan 31, 2013. He has an avid supporter of the LGBT community. ‘ Same love’ is a song which glorifies Homosexuality. He strongly condemn Homophobia in Hip Hop. He struggled with his drug problems in his twenties. He once quoted, ”I want to be someone who is respected and not just in terms of my music. I want to be respected in terms of the way that I treat people… Music is my creative outlet in terms of expressing what is important to me; what has importance, what has a value. And I wanna be respected for that.” Macklemore is a fan of the Major League Baseball team the Seattle Mariners. He even supports the Seattle Seahawks. “I find that when I put my spiritual life first, the rest of my life is easy. When I put my career first, that’s when I have problems.”, said Macklemore.
Fame
He was featured in Unsigned Hype in The Source in early 2012. He was on the cover of XXL Magazine as part of the Freshman Class of 2012. Rolling stone magazine cited Macklemore and Ryan lewis as ”indie rags-to-riches story”. His song ‘ Same love’ was voted as the number one song on the Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2012, Australia. ESPN the Magazine published a 3 page article covering the life of Macklemore. He received seven Grammy nominations and won 4 of them including ‘ The best Rap Album’.
