To talk about Phil Jackson is to talk about one of the greatest coaches in the history of Basket ball.During his career, Phil Jackson coached for the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, New Jersey Nets and the Chicago Bulls. Jackson is also a former NBA player who played professionally from 1967-1980. Phil Jackson is considered one of the greatest coaches of all time and has 11 NBA championships, more than any other coach.

Privy life

A pure bred American by birth, Montana born Phil had a very religious background as both his parents were in the  ministry of God.He grew up playing Varsity Basket ball and also a little bit of football and baseball.He studied at the Williston High School in North Dakota.  He is married twice and has five children and seven grandchildren. He has admitted to using Marijuana and LSD in the past.Jackson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March 2011. He told the Lakers players in May 2011, when they were involved in a second-round play-off series against the Mavericks. Jackson decided to delay his surgery until after the play-off’s.


While in high school,Phil was recruited to play North Dakota to play basketball after graduation. While there, he helped his team win third- and fourth-place finishes in the NCAA Division II championships.Success here opened up an new path for him as he was immediately drafted to the second round by the New York Knicks. Though he was intelligent, hard working, and a good all-round athlete, he was never a star player. He retired from play in 1980.

His role as a coach saw him teach the lower-level professional league first.Believed to be sympathetic to counter culture, he was invariably denied to get a job in the NBA.1987 saw Phil being chosen as the assistant coach to the Chicago Bulls and promoted to Head coach in 1989.For over nine seasons,he led the Bulls to six championships.Jackson and the Bulls made the play-off’s every year, and failed to win the title only three times. He follows the Zen principle while coaching which he believes is essential n the reason for his success.

After winning the title in 1998, Jackson took a year off, and then joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 1999. He had immediate success with the team, leading them to a three-peat against the Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets in 2000, 2001 and 2002.When the Lakers saw a low in their games,  Phil was rehired as the coach and the teams fortunes were restored.

Phil supports the ‘American Indian College Fund’ and the ‘Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.He recently donated $ 2 million the children s home.He is also a part of the Swift Eagle Charitable Foundation.


In 1996, Jackson won the NBA Coach of the Year Award. In the same year he was named one of the ten greatest NBA coaches of all time by vote in an unranked compilation. At the time he was in his 8th year coaching; in the seven years prior he coached 574 games and won 414, with only 160 losses, and had a win-loss percentage of 72.1% – the highest of any coach on the list at that time. He continued his success in his later career; Sources of various sports agencies now confirm that he is the most sought coach for any professional basket  ball team.

In 2002 and 2010 Jackson received  the Amos Alonzo Stagg Coaching Award from the United States  Sports Academy.
