Christopher Nolan is one of the hottest and most paid directors of Hollywood. he has created several of the most successful films of the 21st century. He is an English-American who was raised by his English father and American mother. He was born on July 30, 1970. He works as a film director, a screenwriter as well as a producer.  He is married to Emma Thomas who has worked as a producer in all of his feature films and they own a production company named Syncopy. They have four children.

His Love: Camera

Even as a child, Nolan loved to experiment with his dad’s Super-8 cine camera. When Nolan was a student at University College London, he was already shooting several short movies. He created several short films like Larceny, Tarantula and Doodlebug at University College. It was then when he learned the guerrilla film techniques which he used in his first movie Inception. His short film ‘Larceny’ was displayed at the Cambridge Film Festival in the year 1996. Christopher let his love for camera decide the course of his life and he has come a long way through. He is one of the most innovative storytellers and film makers in the industry today. He has by far become one of the most successful producers of Hollywood.



Nolan is one of the most wonderful directors of Hollywood. He became a part of main stream cinema with his movie ‘Memento’ and continued to deliver one smash after the other. None of his movies made less than $50 million at US box office post Memento. His movie ‘The Inception’ was not only a commercial success but earned critical appreciation too, with a total earning of $69 million.

Nolan did his major debut with ‘Following’ which was a small budget black and white movie. He gave his first hit in the year 2000, Memento, a psychological thriller story penned by his brother Jonathan Nolan. Memento received two Oscar nominations for editing and screenplay. And from then on Christopher has never looked back in his life and delivered hits one after the other.

After directing Insomnia, Nolan resurrected the Batman in 2005 with ‘Batman Begins’ which grabbed more than $372 million at the box office. The following features, The Dark Night (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012) left the audience spellbound and notched over a billion dollars each. His sci-fi based thriller movie Inception (2010) was also a blockbuster. Nolan gave his magical touch to Superman too in his movie The Man of Steel. The seven feature length films of Nolan have made nearly $2.5 billion.

The psychological depth, intellectualism and unorthodox storytelling makes his movies stand out. Most of his movies have a male protagonist who try to come to terms with their present by overcoming the difficulties of past. The women in his films have generally been written as allies or romantic partners. He possess vivid artistic sensibilities and makes complex but most compelling cinematic choices. Vanity Fair’s 2010 list of top earners of Hollywood ranked Christopher fourth with $71.5 million.

Christopher has worked with some of the best actors of Hollywood like Al Pacino, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. He is the founder of the production company Syncopy Films and often partners with his wife Emma Watson. Christopher is one of the richest Hollywood personalities.

Film-making: a family affair

Christopher met his producer cum wife, Emma Thomas, at University College London. He often collaborates with his wife and brother. His brother Jonathan Nolan has written stories for him and his uncle John has acted in his films. Also, one of his sons made an appearance in the movie Inception. His father too was interested in film-making. Christopher began learning the technicalities of shooting at the age of 8, with his father’s Super-8 camera. Looks like, Christopher has film making running in his nerves and that is why he is amazing at what he does.

Christopher Nolan has bagged a number of awards and nominations for his movies. He received honors like Academy award and Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Screenplay, Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award nomination and Independent Spirit Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay.

In the year 2005, Nolan made Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale as the Batman. Then, its sequel The Dark Knights came in 2008 and received global acclaim from audience as well as critics. Nolan was nominated for Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award, Producers Guild of America (PGA) Award as well as Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award. This film also received eight Academy Award nominations. In 2006, he produced The Prestige which received Academy Award nominations for its outstanding art direction and cinematography.

In 2010, Nolan directed as well as produced Inception which earned more than 800 million dollars. It received several honours including four Academy Awards and eight other nominations.
