This hold perfectly true for actor turned director Danny Devito who has delivered a number of performances in his lifetime that more than memorable to this fans and the audience across the world. Life before acting


Did you know that the Penguin that we know from Batman was a qualified hairdresser/ stylist before he became an actor? In his New Jersey hometown, one of his relatives ran a hair salon with the relatives of another actor from his neighborhood, Jack Nicholson. Following graduation in 1962, he took a job as a cosmetician at his sister’s beauty salon. A year later, he enrolled at New York’s American Academy of Dramatic Arts so he could learn more about cosmetology. While at the academy, he fell in love with acting and decided to further pursue an acting career.

Foray into acting

In 1968, Danny landed his first part in a movie when he appeared as a thug in the obscure Dreams of Glass.Daniel Michael DeVito, as he is less popularly knows, got his first cut off a Broadway show and became quite the name when the movie One Flow Over the Cukoo’s Nest hit the screens. Soon after this came Taxi, the TV show that made him famous among the masses, earning him the much needed recognition. This fame earned him a ticket to many roles in movies such as Terms of Endearment, Romancing the Stone, The Jewel of the Nile and Throw Momma from the Train.

Producing and directing motion pictures

His interest for direction took wings when he re-united with his co-starts, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner from Romancing the Stone and directed The War of the Roses. And then there was no turning back, as this Italian American from New Jersey, went onto direct and produce some of the greatest movies of all times, including, Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty, Erin Brockovich and Garden State.


Soon after he started working and directing TV show and became a voice-over artist appearing shows like The Simpsons.

He was inducted into the 2010 New Jersey Hall of Fame for his services and contributions to Arts and Entertainment and also, he  was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6906 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on August 18, 2011.

The investments

With that kind of money Danny DeVito seems to have made some smart choices when it comes to investing his hard earned money, be it restaurants or production houses or mansions. He is the co-owner of a restaurant called DeVito South Beach in Miami, Florida. He and his wife opened their own production company, Jersey Films, with the first movie Hoffa getting released in 1992 and later on went on to produce even world movies such as Freedom Writers.

He has got sprawling mansions located all over. Although he currently lives in Maibu, California with his wife and kids, he has got a beautiful vacation home in Interlakan, New Jersey. He has also got a house in New Canaan, Connecticut, with a part of his family living there. Along with all this he has also got another house in Los Angeles along with the one in Beverly Hills.

Personal Life

Danny DeVito first met actress Rhea Perlman when she went to see him appearing in the off-Broadway play ‘the Shrinking Bride’ in 1971. That sure was love in the air as they moved in together right after two weeks and the couple got married in the year 1982. Although the couple had their share of ups and downs when they got separated for a brief period after 40 years of marriage, they reconciled soon after. The couple has three kids, two daughters and a son.


Throughout their relationship, Perlman and DeVito have acted alongside each other several times, including in the TV show Taxi and the feature film Matilda.

DeVito is known to be a staunch supporter of vegetarianism and is also a huge animal lover. He practically endorses the concept of vegetarianism as he was once seen tweeting to all his followers on Twitter to watch Forks Over Knives, which is a health documentary that advocates for plant-based diets. He and his wife are members of the steering committee of the Friends of the Apollo.
